Property Details
Sleep 4 | 2 Bedrooms | Open Fire | Sea Views | Great Walking | WiFi
The croft house with its semi-detached self-catering was built in 1998 on a family croft that is set in one of the most beautiful areas of Lewis. The self-catering facilities sleep 4 and include a double and twin bedroom, bathroom with shower, fully-fitted kitchen/ dining area with electric cooker and dishwasher and a large and very comfortable lounge with open fire. There is a separate driveway for parking to the side of the property and just beyond the gate is the Valasay Bridge. This historic footbridge spans the Kyles of Valasay and the lower part of the bridge is over 100 years old. The waters that surge through on an incoming or outgoing tide have led this area to be designated a Marine Special Area for Conservation and the habitats created by this are perfect for a range of marine invertebrates and seaweeds. The area is also home to many fish, seals and the elusive Otter. At any time of year you will see Grey Heron and Cormorant fishing the area and a variety of shore birds including Curlew, Oystercatcher and Sandpiper during the summer months.
To stand on the bridge or to lie in your bed and listen to the sound of the water as it flows in or out on the tide is one of the most soothing sounds on the planet. However for the more energetic you can continue across the bridge and walk one of the most popular coastal trails on Lewis. This walk leads north along a way-marked trail to the stunning beach at Bostadh where in 1996 an archaeological dig revealed an Iron Age Village. During the summer months you can visit the reconstructed Iron Age House that has been built just inland of Bostadh Beach before returning to Valasay either by the coastal trail or by the road that will lead you past the memorial to the Bernera Riots (1874) and the Community Centre at Breacleate. Here you may wish to stop for a cup of tea/coffee at the community café or visit our little museum where there are documents and artefacts relating to the islands historic past.
Valasay is the ideal location for exploring the Island of Lewis as a 40 minute drive will take you to the beautiful and rugged Uig District to the west, or a 30 minute drive in the other direction will take you to the Westside of Lewis. Here you can visit the enigmatic Callanish Standing Stone Circles, The Doune Carloway Iron Age Broch and the Gearrannan or Arnol Blackhouses. A 45 minute drive from Valasay will take you to Stornoway our main centre of population.
Elsewhere in Bernera, other walks you can enjoy are to a Norse Mill or to an iron age Broch at Loch Baravat. For the more energetic, sea-kayaking can be enjoyed from the shore at the bottom of the drive, giving access over to Uig and the beautiful islands in between.
Valasay is a forty-minute drive from Stornoway, and is on the spectacular west coast of Lewis. It is ideally placed to explore the very scenic and historical district of Uig, or the west-side loop of Lewis that includes the world famous Standing Stones at Callanish, and the Arnol Blackhouse.
Whether you want to experience the Gaelic culture at the Arts Centre in Stornoway, catch a trout or two for tea or just relax in front of the open fire, Valasay Crofthouse has something special to offer everyone.
